Our Water Quality

How is our lake’s water quality tested? What factors affect it? And most importantly, what can we, as cottage owners, do to help protect it? If you’ve asked yourself these questions, you’re not alone. Many of your neighbours are wondering the same thing. Keep reading to learn more…

Water quality results are reviewed yearly at the AGM.

Water Testing - How is it done?

Salerno Lake is part of a province-wide, volunteer-based, water quality monitoring program called the Lake Partner Program.

Our testing kits arrive via Canada Post each year. Testing is performed in 3 locations on Salerno Lake in the summer months between May to October.

The SDLCA and volunteer members collect water samples for phosphorus and calcium, record the Secchi disc depths, and take water temperature readings about 1 metre below water level. This process helps us to understand what is happening in our lake so that we can take corrective action if there are any concerns.

INVASIVE SPECIES TEST
There are no invasive species, such as Spiny water fleas or zebra mussels, in Salerno Lake (2012). The Ont Federation of Anglers and Hunters supplies FREE equipment and analysis for Spiny Water Flea and Zebra Mussels - arrangements are made in the summer for the equipment to arrive, testing in #1 and #2 locations, and samples returned within a pre-arranged week. PLASTIC MICROBEADS Environment Canada began studying the impacts of plastic microbeads on wildlife and the environment under the previous Conservative government in March 2015. The beads were officially declared toxic in June of this year.  The tiny pieces of plastic are used as exfoliants and cleansers in toiletries, but do not dissolve. They then find their way into oceans, lakes and rivers where the beads are ingested by a variety of organisms.  Plastic microbeads will be banned in Canada, effective mid-2018.

Under "ENVIRONMENT" on the page footer, there is more information on ways to help maintain our water quality by preserving our shorelines, our wetlands, and properly maintaining our septic systems.
