Our Lake Plan

 

A Lake Plan, an invaluable means of protecting our

community and environment in the future. 

 

This Salerno Lake - Lake Plan has been a major undertaking by a small but very dedicated group of volunteers and the support of the Salerno (Devil’s) Lake Cottagers’ Association. 

 

Although, the lake plan study is being undertaken by the SDLCA, a lake plan is not for the benefit of SDLCA members only. The process involve everyone within the lake community, and can only work with everyone's support. It needs to engage all lake community residents (permanent and seasonal), and requires the support of a majority of the community to function properly.

The effort included creating the 3 major deliverables listed below:

 

 

STEP 1 - Shoreline Inventory Project Report:  In October 2012, the Salerno Lake Shoreline Inventory Project was undertaken through U-Links, and a report was completed by Trent University student Devon Fowler. The purpose of the shoreline inventory is to aid in the continued efforts supporting shoreline preservation and management. This shoreline assessment is a good starting point in furthering lake management techniques and creating awareness of maintaining a healthy lake ecosystem. Using the shoreline classification system (defined in the report below), the Salerno Lake shoreline can be monitored going forward for any negative changes that may impact the lake's water quality. 

 

STEP 2 - Survey: The SDLCA Lake Planning Committee developed a survey to gather feedback on common values and concerns from the Salerno Lake Community. The information in the surveys was compiled and assisted in the development of the Vision Statement for Salerno Lake.


Approximately 280 Salerno Lake Plan Surveys were delivered to property owners on and surrounding Salerno Lake in May 2013, either by mail if we had a mailing address, or hand delivered to the cottage. To date, approximately 130 (almost 47%) of the surveys have been returned.

On July 27th, 2013, a Public Meeting and Vision Statement Workshop was held at the Irondale Church Hall. With the assistance of Julia Sutton of French Planning Services who facilitated the workshop, the following Vision Statement was composed. The final Vision Statement reads as follows:

  

 

To sustain, enhance and promote Salerno Lake’s natural heritage for generations through: preserving water quality, tranquility, natural environment and viewscape; sharing a balance between human activity and the environment with respect and dignity.

 

STEP 3 - Salerno Lake - Lake Plan:  As noted above, the study for the plan began following the 2012 SDLCA AGM with the Shoreline Inventory Project through the University of Trent’s U-Links Program in Fall 2012, followed by the Survey in Spring 2013 and tabulating and receiving of feedback during the past year.  

 

A second open house and workshop was held on Saturday July 5th, 2014 at the Irondale Church from 10:00 a.m. to 12 Noon with Julia Sutton of Sutton Environmental Services to review the draft Lake Plan and provide further comments and feedback. 

 

Following the workshop, a final draft has been completed and has been presented to the Salerno Lake Community for approval at a Public Session on August 2nd, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Irondale Community Centre.  

 

On August 2, 2014, the draft Salerno Lake Lake Plan was adopted by the Salerno Lake Community as the Salerno Lake Lake Plan.  The Lake Plan received several positive comments, as noted by the following:

 

"You have been very thorough on your lake plan. It looks great. A job very well done."
"We have to say that the Lake Plan report looks GREAT."

 

Councillors Cecil Ryall (Highlands East) and Jean Neville (Minden Hills) both commented on how well the Lake Plan was done.

 

The purpose of the Lake Plan is to provide information on the Salerno Lake Community and recommendations to assist in maintaining, sustaining and improving the things we value as residents of the Salerno Lake Community.
